2010 Community Involvement
Loudoun Youth
On June 26, Team VCB worked again with Loudoun Youth, the non-profit organization that coordinates community resources to develop youth programs and leadership opportunities. Representatives from Loudoun County branches volunteered at the organization’s Youth Fest, an all-day music and games festival held in Ashburn, which provided a forum for young adults to learn more about civic opportunities in the community.
Red Cross
On June 19, Kamara Napper, one of VCB's Community Banking Officers, ran in the Alexandria Run for the Red 5K to benefit the American Red Cross in the National Capital Region. VCB also helped sponsor for the event.
Alexandria Pet Adoption
On May 15th, the Del Ray branch hosted its annual pet adoption in partnership with the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria.
Prince William Special Olynpics
On May 15th, for the third consecutive year, the Prince William branches supported the Prince William Special Olympics Track & Field Regional event in Woodbridge. VCB volunteers from our four Prince William branches managed the awards table, preparing and presenting ribbons to event winners. The VCB staff says it is awe-inspiring to witness the enthusiasm, determination and pride displayed by the athletes who participate in races and relays that encourage achievement beyond their individual challenges.
Rebuilding Together Alexandria
On April 24, VCB staff members from Alexandria and Arlington participated for the seventh consecutive year in Rebuilding Together Alexandria (RTA), making several repairs to an elderly couple’s home, including installing handrails in stairways, mounting grab bars in the bathroom and painting the front yard fence. These much-needed improvements will help the residents live safely in their home for years to come.
Project Discovery
Also on April 24th, the Del Ray branch participated in Project Discovery's 14th Annual Walkathon at Fort Ward Park. Funds raised supported scholarships for Alexandria Students.
Friends of the Rappahannock
On April 24, VCB branch staff from Central Park in Fredericksburg
collected trash and debris for the second year in a row at
the biannual Rappahannock River Cleanup. This event educates the community about the damages caused
by pollution and the importance of river preservation. During cleanup, volunteers for Friends of the Rappahannock
often collect about 6,000 pounds of trash to help
protect the scenic, historic river.
Loudoun Youth
On April 22, VCB volunteers from Loudoun County teamed up with the Rotary Club of Ashburn to assist Loudoun Youth, a non-profit organization that coordinates community resources to develop youth programs and leadership opportunities. VCB worked alongside teens as Loudoun Youth held its final installment of the “Battle of the Bands,” consisting of a series of talent contests in which student musicians competed with other musicians during live concert performances. VCB volunteers managed registration tables, ran concession stands and served as chaperones.
St. Margaret of Cortona Transitional Residences
During March and April, Bill James from the Lake Ridge branch gave classes to share fundamental financial knowledge with the residents of St. Margaret of Cortona, a transitional housing program that help homeless families with the support needed to reestablish independence after they have exited an emergency shelter.
Lanier Middle School
The Fairfax branch is sponsoring a continuing in-branch art display to showcase the artistic creations of students at Lanier Middle School.
Cystic Fibrosis Foundation
During the month of February, the Ashburn branch participated in the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation's "Give from the Heart" fundraising campaign and displayed paper hearts with the names of customers and business partners who donated to the cause.
L.A.W.S. (Loudoun Abused Women's Shelter)
In January, Charles Kapur and Paul Yeloushan conducted a Banking 101 seminar at Loudoun Abused Women's Shelter. They spoke to a group of about a dozen women, many of whom had little to no prior personal finance experience, covering fundamental topics regarding consumer's rights and responsibilities, most common reasons consumer incur bank fees and charges, tips for safely using online and automated resources and tips for safeguarding personal identification.
Muscular Dystrophy Association
During the month of January, the Battlefield and Signal Hill branches participated in a "Lock-up" fundraiser for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
